Ground source heating draws stored solar heat from the bedrock. A heat pump raises it to the temperature the house needs, and for every kilowatt-hour of electricity you pay for you get three to five back as heat.
Calculate over the whole service life, not just the investment. A system lasts 20 years or more, and the compressor is the part replaced first.
